RULES OF
COMPETITION:
1. A school may enter up to three athletes per individual event and
one relay team per relay event, where Boys and Girls events are separate
events.
2. A school may enter a
second set of up to three athletes in each individual event and one relay team
in each relay event by registering
a second team (B team).
B teams must be registered separately from A
teams (i.e. a second set of entry paperwork must be filled out for the B team).
3.
There will be no team scoring.
4. Each athlete may compete in up to three individual events. Relays DO NOT count toward the three event
limit. If
an athlete is entered in too many individual events on the entry paperwork,
then the coach will be contacted and asked to make the appropriate
changes. Coaches are strongly
encouraged to keep track of the event counts on their athletes, because any
athlete who competes in more than three individual events will be disqualified
in those (extra) events.
5. In the field events – long jumpers will
receive 3 jumps and shot putters will receive 3 throws. If there are ties, then we will follow the
standard NFHS tie-breaking procedure for that event.
6.
Athletes/relay teams compete for awards on the basis of time across all
sections of a particular running event final.
That is, awards are determined from all performances (overall) in an
event.
7.
We will follow a rolling event schedule that is subject to change if weather
conditions dictate.
8.
Athletes will receive competitor numbers, which should be written on the back
of their right hand.
9.
The fastest 8 individuals from all 100 and 200 meter prelim heats will advance
to their respective 100 and 200 meter finals.
Any ties will be broken by a “run-off”, held at the conclusion of the
Wednesday night meet. We ask that
coaches not enter athletes in the Wednesday night 100 and 200 meter prelims who
cannot attend the Thursday night finals in those events. We announce 2 alternates in the 100 and 200
meter finals, in the event of a scratch by an athlete who qualified for the
final.
10.
All non-laned running events (Distance Medley, and the 800 and 1600 meter runs)
will utilize a waterfall start. The
first lap of the 4x400 meter relay and Jr-Sr Sprint Medley relay will be
conducted in lanes, but runners will not be required to remain in their lane on
any subsequent laps.
11.
All races with multiple section finals will be seeded as slowest to
fastest. Although not required, coaches
are strongly encouraged to provide entry performance marks for their
athletes when submitting entries.
Athletes entered without performance marks will be placed in slower
sections.
12.
Coaches are asked to please report any scratches as soon as possible before an
event.
13.
Meet records can only be set in an event final.
REPORTING
TO EVENTS:
1. All running
event athletes must report to the running event check-in clerk starting
with the first call for that event.
The running event check-in clerk will be located at the north end of the
track. Any athlete not reporting by the
third (final) call may be dropped from that event – all drops are at the
discretion of the check-in clerk.
2. All field event
athletes will be checked in at the location of their event, starting with the
first event call. Any athlete not
reporting by the third (final) call may be dropped from that event. As with the running events, all drops are at
the discretion of the field event official running a particular event.
3. Athletes must
communicate any potential running vs field event conflicts with the respective
field event official and running event check-in clerk in order to resolve the
conflict. Any change in the field event
order is left to the discretion of the field event official at that particular
event.
Awards:
the Derby Middle
School Sprint Race of Champions and Distance Race of Champions are special
events where we will be presenting trophies to the top 8 finishers. In all other events, the top 5
finishers will receive medals and the 6th-8th place finishers will receive
ribbons.
Special Events:
Distance
Medley relay:
each relay team runs in the following order 1200m-400m-800m-1600m.
Jr-Sr
Sprint Medley relay:
each relay team runs in the following order 100m-100m-200m-400m, and
must include at least one Junior athlete (6th grade or younger) and
at least one Senior athlete (7-8th grade).
Grade levels will be confirmed at check-in. This race was included to give our younger
athletes an opportunity to compete and earn awards.
100
meter final:
prelims in the 100 meter dash will be used to seed 2 sections of 100
meter final.
The
first 100 meter final is the Derby Middle School Sprint Race of
Champions and will be filled with the 8 fastest qualifiers from the
preliminary heats. We will announce the
top 8 finishers in this event, present them with
trophies and crown the winner as Derby Middle School Sprint Champion.
The
second 100 meter final is the Junior 100 meter final. This race will be filled with the 8 fastest
runners from the Junior (6th grade and below) 100
meter prelim event. The top 5 finishers
in the 100 meter Junior final will receive medals and
the next 3 finishers will receive ribbons.
1600
meter run: the last
section of 1600 meter run will be designated as the Derby Middle School
Distance Race of Champions. Once results
are finalized, we will announce the top 8 finishers in this event, present them
with trophies, and crown the winner Derby Middle School Distance Champion.
