Ballard High
School coach Don Goodwin obviously was not sold on his team's victory in its
annual Derby Invitational girls' track and field meet last night.
Offered
congratulations, Goodwin lifted the first-place trophy, pointed it in the
direction of Assumption coach Barry Kornstein and jokingly charged, "Yeah,
but he sandbagged it on us."
Although
Kornstein rested some of his top athletes after they competed in the Kenwood
Classic in Clarksville, Tenn., on Saturday, the Rockets finished second in an
11-team field that included several Class AAA powers.
Ballard won
with 108 points, and Assumption had 84. Central (74), Male (72) and Eastern
(69) rounded out the top five.
"(Kornstein)
has a tough team," Goodwin said. "He didn't run a lot of them, and
they still looked pretty strong."
Goodwin also
acknowledged that the meet, which Kornstein said "used to be the best in
girls' track in the state," has lost much of its appeal with the
proliferation of rubber tracks. Ballard has an asphalt surface.
"We have
too much tradition here not to have one of the better tracks in the city,"
said Goodwin, who guided the Lady Bruins to three straight state titles (2000-
02). "We've kind of fell behind in that."
But he
admitted that he was pleased his team did not fall behind much last night.
Ballard won six events: two sprint relays, both hurdles events, the long jump
and the 3,200 meters.
Seniors Elaina
Shumake and Ciara Styles and freshman phenom Lutisha Bowen led the way .
Shumake, the defending AAA state champion in the 100 hurdles, swept the 100 and
300 distances in that discipline. She also teamed with Styles, Bowen and junior
Kristyn Robinson to win the 400 and 800 relays.
Styles took
first in the long jump and second in the 100, and Bowen was second in both the
200 and the triple jump.
Central senior
Brittney Belle, the defending AAA champion in both the 100 and 200, edged
Styles and Bowen, respectively, in those races.
"She's
definitely a competitor," Bowen said.
Junior Emily
Blake recorded Ballard's other win, in the 3,200.
Sophomore
Jordan Danridge, who has developed into one of the best throwers in AAA, posted
Assumption's only victory, in the shot put. She placed second to Central's
Gabrielle Goode in the discus.
Mercy won the
3,200 relay and the 400 but could have done more. Senior Carmen Mims, who has
nine AA titles in cross country and track, sparked the relay team in the
opening event and sat for the rest of the meet.
Mercy senior
Karen Ford upset Central junior Brittany Davies in the 400.
