State track and field meet Class AAA: Depth propels Trinity to first title
since 1978
By Nathan Chambers LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Despite
markedly different endings to yesterday's Class AAA State Track and Field
Championships, two Louisville high school teams emerged equally exultant from
the University of Kentucky's Shively complex. Trinity not only won its
first state title since 1978 but did so without an entrant in the final race,
the 1,600-meter relay. Showcasing impressive depth,
the Shamrocks finished with 75 points. Bryan Station was second with 56, and
St. Xavier was third with 55. "I'm really stunned, to
be honest with you," Trinity coach Mike Magre said. "But everybody
ran their best races. I don't think we had one guy who didn't. I'm really
proud of them." The girls' meet, on the
other hand, came down to the 1,600 relay, where Assumption did all it had to
do to secure a share of the title with Paul Dunbar. It was the first state
crown for both. Leading 53-52, the Rockets
placed sixth in the relay -- one spot behind the Lady Bulldogs -- to clinch
the first tie since Seneca and Owensboro were declared co-champions in 1986. Both teams had 56 points.
Central and Owensboro tied for third with 49. Boys Trinity had three firsts, one
second and three thirds among several point-earning performances. "Points are hard-earned
here," Magre said. "You have to get them any way you can." The 3,200 relay team and
high jumper Steve Jenkins each won on Friday. Senior Aaron Parker handed the
Shamrocks their other victory yesterday, winning the 200 in 22.20 seconds. Junior Kenny Minogue
finished second behind John Hardin senior Phillip Warsaw in the 800, senior
Pat Daly took thirds in the 1,600 and 3,200 and junior Steve Orndorff added a
third in the long jump. Covington Catholic senior
Tim Duncan set a state record in the 300 hurdles and also won the 110 hurdles.
Despite gashing his left thigh on the third hurdle in the 300, he finished
the race in 37.89 -- breaking the mark of 37.94 that North Hardin's Joey
Stockton set in 1993. "It was in my mind, but
I didn't think I could pull it out that fast," Duncan said. "I
can't put it into words." Waggener senior Alfonso
Smith, who has signed to play football at the University of Kentucky, won two
impressive duels with Pleasure Ridge Park senior JaJuan Spillman, a
University of Louisville football signee. In the 100, Smith recovered
from a slow start out of the blocks and passed Spillman to win in 10.89.
Spillman finished third behind Paul Dunbar's C.T. Trumbo. Smith overcame Spillman
again on the last leg in the 400 relay and leaned across the finish line
ahead of him to give Waggener the victory. "I don't want to lose
to a Louisville recruit," Smith said. "I saw that he was in front,
and he was not about to beat me. I catch people. That's what I do." Seneca senior Duke Cole won
the 400 and also anchored the 1,600 relay team that placed second behind
Tates Creek. Girls Junior Laura Armstrong
anchored Assumption's 1,600 relay team and knew she had to finish right
behind Paul Dunbar freshman Sarah Meador. Notre Dame senior Kristen Gieger
was between them but pushed past Meador down the stretch. "When I saw the Notre
Dame girl pass her at the end, it was amazing," Armstrong said. "We
finally won state." The Rockets also benefited
from two remarkable individual performances from their own athletes. Senior Kristen Elder, a
former gymnast, tumbled to a victory in the 300 hurdles. She tripped over the
finish line -- literally a head in front of the defending champion, John
Hardin junior Nicole Cabrera -- and somersaulted to her feet unhurt. "I had nothing left,
and I just rolled," Elder said, smiling. "It was a good way to
finish." Armstrong also beat a
defending champion, Conner junior Katherine Alcorn, to win the 800. Paul Dunbar won the 400 and
800 relays, and junior Jenean Pressly prevailed in the triple jump by three-quarters
of an inch over Assumption junior Dominique Lyons. Central senior Brittney
Belle repeated in both the 100 and 200 and also anchored the winning 1,600
relay team. She survived an impressive field of youngsters -- including
Ballard freshman Lutisha Bowen, Waggener junior Amaka Omenyinma and Manual
freshman Jennifer Nwachukwu -- to win the sprints. Bowen was second in both. "The freshmen are
taking over," Belle said. "But I can't let them get my races. They
didn't beat me today." Scott junior Kortni
Dukes swept the 1,600 and the 3,200. North Hardin junior Ashley Boykin won
the 400, edging Central junior Brittany Davies.
